Context

Magellium Artal Group, with its 300 employees, is an independent player specialising in the remote sensing data value chain (from satellite or drone sensors to their use in Earth observation systems and services, mapping, and geo-intelligence), which promotes expertise in space technologies, software, image and signal processing, and geomatics.

As part of its Earth observation activities, Magellium is involved in major programs led by space agencies and operational agencies. These Earth observation projects implement scientific processing chains for payloads on board satellites.

Since 2020, Magellium hasbeen producing water, snow, and ice coverage products for Europe. These products, derived from satellite observations, indicate the presence of snow on the continental surface and the presence of ice on lakes and rivers, and are delivered by theCopernicus Land service. Magellium is responsible for coordinating the entire project, around which a consortium has been formed. This consortium is made up of European laboratories and private companies responsible for the design, maintenance, and updating of scientific algorithms for snow and ice detection.

This service involves the daily processing of large amounts of data using various algorithms to generate advanced products that are made available to end users.

The system that produces this data is hosted on a highly parallelized cloud and is implemented using the latest generation of technologies.

Magellium is seeking an operations manager for the COPERNICUS HR-S&I service (water, snow, and ice coverage).

Job description

You will join a team consisting of a project manager, a technical coordinator, and two thematic engineers, where you will be responsible for operations including active participation in the maintenance of production lines.

As Operations Manager for the COPERNICUS HR-S&I service, you will monitor the production of the various products offered by this service and ensure the smooth running of the production system in the cloud environment selected to host this service.

Your main responsibilities:

  • Monitordailyproduct productionin support of the operations manager.
  • Maintain the production system in operational conditions onthe cloud that hosts the service.
  • Detect any anomalies or delays indaily productionusing the system dashboard or tickets opened by scientific partners (MANTIS tool), who are responsible for reporting any anomalies in the generation of their products.
  • Development of the production system inconjunction with the technical coordinator, to integrate new scientific algorithms or implement new features

 

To carry out these tasks, you will need to:

  • Mastering the production system, monitoring its performance, and investigating various problems
  • Monitor the proper functioning of the system and product generation on a daily basis.
  • Launch specific productions on an ad hoc basis and publish the generated products for end users.
  • Mastering the DevOps process, improving it, and implementing it for production system updates
  • Deploy algorithm updates delivered as Docker images
  • Interact with the various stakeholders: project team, industrial partners developing the algorithms, support team for the cloud used, end customer.
  • Coordinate and actively participate in correcting any anomalies encountered
  • Anticipate potential problems and contribute to the search for optimisation of operations and the production system.

This position will allow you to play a key role in maintaining this high value-added service. It implements an image production system based on complex algorithms in a cloud environment.

As part of the COPERNICUS program, you will join a multidisciplinary team in a technical and scientific environment that will enable you to develop your skills.

Profile required

With a backgroundin computer science or software engineering, you havesignificant experience (2 to 6 years) in a software development, DevOps, or software systems operationsrole in a cloud environment.

Technical skills/hard skills

  • Software development skills (Python, Java, PostgreSQL, Git)
  • Proficiency in DevOps and cloud environments (OpenStack, Terraform, Docker, Nomad, GitLab CI/CD)
  • Experience in operations/production system support

Soft skills

  • Rigorous and highly results-oriented
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork abilities, essential qualities for thriving in a collaborative environment at the heart of the Copernicus program.
  • Ability to adapt and develop skills in new technical areas
