Internship – Automation of the validation process for water quality

Job description

BACKGROUND

Magellium's Earth Observation Unit is structured into five thematic clusters, one of which is dedicated to measurement physics and applications. One group works specifically on parameters used to assess water quality (surface temperature, chlorophyll-a concentration, transparency, etc.) in lakes, lagoons, and coastal waters. The team works on the entire operational chain, from the development of atmospheric correction algorithms and the determination of water quality parameters to product validation and dissemination via a web platform. The aim is to make the data usable by scientists and environmental managers with a wide range of technical expertise and thematic applications.

The validation phase is essential to ensure the accuracy of the results obtained. This step involves comparing the values calculated from satellite acquisitions with field values, known as in situ values, to assess any discrepancies. To be reliable, the comparison must be carried out on bodies of water with varied characteristics and on many different dates. However, several difficulties arise when attempting to increase the density of comparisons: simultaneity of measurements, depth, presence of clouds on satellite images, etc. Validation is both crucial and complex to implement and requires the management of databases derived from in situ measurements. Finally, this validation step must be automated in order to enable the analysis of the performance of algorithms under development before they are put into operational production.

The objective of this internship is to implement an ergonomic validation tool to inform users about data quality and to upgrade the processing chain.

SUBJECT

The subject of this internship is to devise, develop, and automate a validation process using in situ data.

Currently, team members each use their own code for validation, and the on-site databases are not standardized. The goal is therefore to create a common tool for validation. This tool would be hosted on CNES infrastructure and would run automatically each time the algorithms are modified to validate or reject the changes and generate a validation report.

The internship will focus on three main aspects:

  1. Validation: Learning how to use processing algorithms and validation processes for data obtained from satellite imagery, understanding evaluation metrics, analyzing issues according to parameters, presenting expected results.
  2. On-site databases: Retrieval and management of on-site databases, cleaning and manipulation of these databases, analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the various databases available, selection of a representative sample of data.
  3. Automation: Implementation of the code on the CNES shared infrastructure so that it can be used by all team members and its use in the continuous integration of algorithms developed by the team.

While the internship includes a scientific component focused on understanding water quality parameters, it also includes a significant development component to create a shared tool accessible on a CNES platform.

Depending on the intern's interests and progress, the internship may also focus more on one of these aspects. Depending on the schedule, the intern may participate in field missions to collect data in situ. The work will be done in Python, using expert tools available in the Magellium ecosystem.

PERSPECTIVE

Following this internship, a permanent position may be offered.

Yes, we hire end-of-study internships. These internships can then develop into permanent contracts (50% of internships transformed into permanent contracts by 2023).

We can take on work-study students subject to availability of places and the company/school rhythm, as some projects are not always compatible with a work-study rhythm.

The process is fast! We first contact you for an initial discussion with the HR department by telephone or, ideally, on site at our premises. This allows you to immerse yourself in the company and discuss our vision, our values and the job's missions. Then, depending on the nature of the position, we propose a technical discussion with the project manager or the manager of the unit to which you will be assigned. We make sure that each exchange is as natural as possible to put you in the best possible conditions. If there is a specific arrangement to be made for your situation, please let us know!

You can apply for our vacancies directly on our website www.magellium.com in the Join us tab.

Your application must include a maximum 3-page CV. Little bonus: be creative and original in your presentation! (video, infographics for example).
