Tech Lead, Earth Observation Performance Center (M/F)

Job description

As part of its Earth observation activities, Magellium is involved in major programs led by space agencies and other institutions. Magellium is recognized by its customers for its scientific expertise in many fields, ranging from measurement physics to downstream applications. The Earth observation projects entrusted to us by our customers involve, in particular, the implementation of scientific processing chains for data acquired by satellites.

These data processing chains are designed for a variety of purposes: scientific research, proof of concept, or integration into the ground segments of satellite missions. What sets them apart is the need to combine expertise in scientific and algorithmic remote sensing techniques with a mastery of the engineering aspects (methodological, organizational, and IT) of data processing chains.

As part of our "Earth Observation" unit, you will work within a team specializing in the development and operation of ground segments, with space agencies—including CNES and ESA—as our primary clients.

The position available is for the role ofTech Lead at the Performance Center for the ESA FLEX mission (FLEX DISC – Data Innovation and Science Cluster). This flagship project for ESA’s FLEX mission aims to monitor and ensure the quality of products related to vegetation fluorescence. Magellium coordinates a consortium of 13 European institutional and industrial partners and carries out numerous technical and scientific activities.

Reporting to the FLEX DISC Project Manager, you will be responsible for technical oversight at the system level. You will lead and provide technical guidance for the work on the project’s various critical subsystems:

  • IPF (Instrument Processing Facilities): Operational processing lines L1C and L2.
  • L2PP (L2 Processor Prototype): A scientific prototype for extracting fluorescence and biophysical parameters.
  • Cal/Val & QC: Tools for calibration, scientific validation, and operational quality control.
  • CP (Collaborative Platform): A collaborative workspace for the scientific community.

In this role, your main responsibilities are:

  • Overall management and coordinationof system development to ensure that performance objectives (scientific accuracy, computation time) are met, in close collaboration with ESA and consortium partners.
  • Technical supervision and monitoringof the progress of subsystems (work planning, supervision of subsystem managers, technical risk management).
  • Managing system interfaces and collaborating withscientific experts(ESL) to carry out the activities necessary to measure and improve the accuracy of the products generated by the Ground Segment.
  • Overseeing the in-flight acceptance and operations phasesto ensure compliance with ESA requirements throughout the entire lifespan of the FLEX mission, including coordinating the MCO (Maintenance in Operational Condition) of processors and calibration/validation tools during the in-flight acceptance and operations phases.

Profile required

You hold a degree from a prestigious engineering school or a Ph.D. in computer science, applied mathematics, or image processing, and have proven experience in technical/system management within the space ground segment.

Technical skills:

  • Expertise in satellite image processing pipelines and an understanding of product levels (L1/L2).
  • Understanding the various subsystems of a Ground Segment, including the processing chain and calibration and validation activities.
  • Strong skills in scientific software development.
  • Ability to summarize and critically review technical and scientific documents.
  • Fluency in English (international context involving ESA and European partners).

Soft skills:

  • Strong technical leadership and a knack for coordinating multiple technical and scientific stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills for interacting with panels of experts.
  • An interest in the scientific issues related to climate change and vegetation.
  • Strong ability to adapt and quickly learn new technical topics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a team player, and clear communication.
